Over the course of my nine years teaching, I have established a curriculum drawn from many sources of standards, pedagogies, resources, and outcomes. For each grade level K-5, I have established a four prong approach to music education. Each element intertwined to build a sequential educational experience. Through each prong, the children answer essential questions about teach topic.
Music Literacy
- How is music organized?
- Rhythmic reading and writing both in traditional and iconic notation
- Melodic sight reading through the use of Kodaly-Curwen methods
- Musical vocabulary development including terminology for tempo, dynamics, form, and harmony
Music Performance
- What does it take to be a successful performer?
- Singing both independently and in a group with increasing successful intonation
- Playing instruments with appropriate technique
- Orff melody instruments, unpitched percussion, soprano recorders
- Creative movement, choreographed and in response
Music Appreciation
- How does music represent historical periods and diverse cultures?
- Studying classical composers
- Singing and listening to a wide range of music across genres and cultures
- Comparing and contrasting of music
Classroom Connections
- How does music connect to other non-musical subjects
- Writing across the curriculum
- Music and math
- Integrated units, particularly in the area of social studies and literature
