Curriculum

Page history last edited by Sarah B. Thomas 13 years, 6 months ago

Over the course of my nine years teaching, I have established a curriculum drawn from many sources of standards, pedagogies, resources, and outcomes.  For each grade level K-5, I have established a four prong approach to music education.  Each element intertwined to build a sequential educational experience. Through each prong, the children answer essential questions about teach topic.

Music Literacy

  • How is music organized?
    • Rhythmic reading and writing both in traditional and iconic notation
    • Melodic sight reading through the use of Kodaly-Curwen methods
    • Musical vocabulary development including terminology for tempo, dynamics, form, and harmony

Music Performance

  • What does it take to be a successful performer?
    • Singing both independently and in a group with increasing successful intonation
    • Playing instruments with appropriate technique
      • Orff melody instruments, unpitched percussion, soprano recorders
    • Creative movement, choreographed and in response

Music Appreciation

  • How does music represent historical periods and diverse cultures?
    • Studying classical composers
    • Singing and listening to a wide range of music across genres and cultures
    • Comparing and contrasting of music

Classroom Connections

  • How does music connect to other non-musical subjects
    • Writing across the curriculum
    • Music and math
    • Integrated units, particularly in the area of social studies and literature
